Joining a fire company doesn't mean that you have to spend hours of time training, rush into burning buildings, or extricate people from wrecked vehicles. Of course those options are available to you, but there are so many other vital things you can do to help. A fire company doesn't just exist when there is an emergency. There are day to day activities that keep a company, especially a volunteer company, running and able to answer when a call goes out for help. Things like fundraising events, catering, building maintenance, apparatus maintenance, community involvement, etc. All those things and so much more keep the company going and able to answer calls for help. None of these things are generally thought of when someone thinks about joining a fire company but they are vital and almost anyone can perform these tasks. They don't take hours of training, testing, or tons of preparation... but without them the company grinds to a halt and the community suffers. I think we all know the old adage about "for want of a nail"...
For want of a nail the shoe was lost.
For want of a shoe the horse was lost.
For want of a horse the rider was lost.
For want of a rider the battle was lost.
For want of a battle the kingdom was lost.
And all for the want of a horseshoe nail.
It is so true for a volunteer fire company. For want of YOU, what could be lost?
